Pre-Toddler Play

As an avid Pinterest user, I have tons of toddler activities pinned. However, as the parent of a non-walking 14 month old, most of these activities are too advanced for him to enjoy. I've searched for some "pre-toddler activities" and most of them point to the same few blogs. So I thought I'd write my own. :)

The first thing I realized is that I need to CHILL out! Sometimes perusing pinterest makes me feel as if I should be creating elaborate creative activities for CastiĆ©l when really, all he wants is time with ME! I also realized that most of the activities he enjoys are very simple.

Here is my list of pre-toddler activities and toys. Use it for ideas or (more likely) use it as reassurance that you are already doing okay.

1.  Sing songs. Our favorites are those with motions or clapping such as "If You're Happy and You Know It," "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider," "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes," " B-I-N-G-O," and the Sunday Schoo…

Reason #431 why I LOVE Ikea!

Some of Castiel's FAVORITE toys have come from Ikea!  We love them too because they are well-made and inexpensive. He has played with the stacking cups for a long time now, but he is beginning to use the shape sorter.  He likes to take the top part off of the wood stacking toy (the one that looks like a lighthouse),  and he can dump all the rings off, but they are pretty heavy for him to do much else with right now.

He also has a train set from Ikea, and although he doesn't do much besides chew on the trains, I think we will get a lot of use out of them in the future.  :)

We have a lot of other Ikea toy items on our "wish list" (just check out my Pinterest board!)

Scarf game for Babies

Babies love scarves - and emptying out boxes!  I decided to make Castiel a fun little activity for FREE!   I had a plastic bin full of scarves that I don't wear anymore and an empty tissue box.

Although I could have tied them together, I just stuffed all the scarves into the box.

Castiel (13 months old) loved taking the scarves out of the box.  He also tried to stuff them back in.

Castiel is Cuteness Personified!

Castiel is almost 14 months old and gets cuter every day (if that is even possible!)  Here are a few examples to support my claim.  :)

Castiel LOVES books!  His first word was "book" and he spends much of his time looking at his books.  He has also recently learned how to say "read" so he can order you to read him his favorite book!  His favorites are Dr. Seuss books, and his current favorite is Dr. Seuss's ABC.  He has started to turn to a page and then look at you, waiting for you to read it.  (Even if he is sitting where you can't possibly see the page or the words!)  So, we don't always read books from front to back!

We read the Bible at bedtime (he has a little Bible), and before we read, I sing the song "The B-I-B-L-E."  This afternoon he brought the Bible to me - he didn't want to read it, he wanted me to sing the song!  Every time the song was over, he just held the Bible up in the air as a signal for me to begin again.

$1 Books for Baby

It is no secret that Castiel LOVES books!  Books have always been his favorite "toy," and as soon as he could sit up, that is what he wanted to hold.  Now, at 13 months old, he has figured out how to reach through the slats of his crib to grab books off of the nightstand to bring into his crib.

I credit his love for books to several things - (1) Genetics - Carlos and I both loved to read as children, (2) We have read to him since he was a newborn, so books have always been a part of his life, and (3) He is surrounded by books.  At my work baby shower, people brought books to build Castiel's library, plus I brought a lot of my old books out of boxes for him.  In addition, Carlos and I are always on the lookout for affordable books for him.

We hit the JACKPOT both in the Target Dollar Deals and at the Dollar Tree!  These sturdy board books are some of Castiel's favorites!
